Week Six: Video Review

After watching the videos I was able to gain an in depth understanding of the concepts, intricacies, time and effort that is necessary, as well as the advanced procedures that are involved with making these specific forms of art.  Specifically, with the "Through the Eyes of the Sculptor" film I was able to take a massive amount of information and appreciation for this particular art field.  One specific thing that I learned was how the process of sculpting is done, prior to viewing this film I thought a lone sculptor was chiseling always at an enormous piece of rock.  Moreover, I also was astonished when I discovered that there is a team of people helping an artist attain a certain goal, this process reminded me of an assembly line that encouraged creativity, which is uncommon in a process like this.  The second main thing that I learned was about the years of experience and dedication that is necessary to proclaim professionalism.  Again, by watching this film I noticed the accumulation of experience over many years that Emmanuel Fillion had to partake in in order to be deemed as a credible sculptor.  This also allowed me to understand the dedication and effort that goes into many sculptures, for me I think of it as a lifetime of experience and not some spontaneous occurrence or compensated endeavor.

As for the film titled “Glass and Ceramics” I was provided with a new found intelligence in regards to a form of art again.  This particular craft was very interesting to learn about, specifically because I never knew about the extensive process that is undergone to achieve a completed project.  Also, not only learning about the chemistry about how glass is made, but how glass can be tinted and shaped for stained glass, as well how glass in used in architecture was very profound in my opinion.   Specifically with stained glass I was again astonished by how lead is used as well as the prior artistic process that is necessary to reach the completed version.  Using smaller replicas and testing pieces never has crossed my mind before watching this film, very fascinating.

The third film, “Installation,” was quite interesting as well as educational.  Before watching this film I have no idea what the forms of art that depicted these certain things were called.  For example, while visiting the Albright-Knox Art Gallery I decided to venture into the other parts of the gallery rather than staying on the floor where photography was allowed.  By doing this I encountered several works of art that implemented video, projectors, televisions, beds, and other ordinary objects that were used in a creative fashion.  Moreover, I think I am obligated to mention that this is my second favorite form of art, but who is counting?  Getting back to the objective, one of the most important things that I learned was how an artist can take utilitarian objects and use their creativity to turn them into marvelous and unique forms of art.  I do not know how to explain why I find this so fascinating, an attempt may be done so by acknowledging the fact that I think art can be anything, and relies on interpretations and perceptions.

In comparison the chapters in the Getlein textbook I found that films were related to them in an enlightened manner.  Being an enormous nerd and partaking in my nerdy standards I am always trying to figure out the best forms of materials to learn from.  However, during my scholarly research at Buffalo State College I began to notice that incorporating numerous educational elements is the most prominent way of learning, meaning that I have steered away from only using the reading materials.  With this being stated, I think the videos related extremely well to the chapters, they brought that missing link that ended the little amount of confusion and wariness I had.  Furthermore, the films were able to go into a detailed description in regards to the many processes that these forms of art endure, the processes that help them reach the completed version, also, a process that is seldom noticed by the viewers.  Lastly, I thought that all the films were outstanding; they gave a new insight into the effort and dedication that goes into these works of art.  They also expounded the philosophy of aesthetics again, and how works of art are an extension of the artist that creates them.  Without this I think that works of art would be considered mundane and not have the capability of influencing the thoughts and emotions that they expel.  Again, awesome and very fascinating films, I would recommend them to anyone, not only art students!

Reviewing Peer Responses to Artwork

Ah ha! Upon viewing my fellow students blog's I had the amazing opportunity not only to view their minds and curiosity at work, but, I also gained an enormous amount of inspiration for my next art project!
Devon's Blog

Particularly, while looking at Devon's blog I noticed how she was able to generate the idea of color in one of her photographs.  The picture literally made me think of how the objects in the photograph were able to "pop" so well, as well other how my other senses would have reacted if I was actually at the location where she captured the photograph.  Additionally, this photograph that I mentioned could also be interpreted as other principles/elements of art; such as unity, and focul point. Furthermore, Devon 's trip to the art gallery ended up with viewing the same paintings and works of art as I did.  We did have one painting that we both presented, an abstract-like painting by Robert Delauney.  However, our reasoning for selecting this painting was different I think that our mental state may have been similar, meaning that our thoughts or feelings may have been the same.  It may have not been for the same duration, still, at some point I think that there was mutual process of thoughts and feelings.  Moreover, a painting Devon presented that piqued my interest was Mark Rothko's "Orange and Yellow."  The reason why this occured is due to his use of bright colors and how they made me think and feel, mostly elated and energetic. Lastly (for Devon's blog), the things that intrigued me about this painting brought on questions about the artist and work of art too, I was curious to know why the artist did this painting, specifically where his cretive thought came from and what was going on in his life during the creation of this painting.  Again, great stuff!  Below are here links.

Maggie's Blog

Maggie's use of the Photobucket website was truly amazing! Her template alone intrigued me to wander through her blogspot page, which in turn allowed me to gain an idea of how she thought and how art influenced her thoughts in an extremely positive way.  Specifically, with her photograph of a log with moss covering a portion of it exhibited the concept of texture very well.  By looking at the photograph my thoughts quickly were tuned to the wondering of what the object must feel like, I literally wanted to go outside and find a similar log.  Also. this image can be correlated to other elements and principles, such as variety, focul point, unity, and emphasis, well in my opinion.  With viewing her second project I was able to gain a profound intelligence about more art located in Long Island, which was a refreshing instance.  The painting by Joanne Dumas titled "Softly" caught my attention because the abstract-like elements of it.  Since this is my favorite form of art I thoroughly enjoyed viewing this artwork, another reason is due to the fact that is new to me, being in the Buffalo area I found that most of the students had photographs of the same paintings or works of art that I chose.  Moreover, this work of art brought my thoughts to wondering again, as aformentioned the questions were; where did the artist come up with the concept?, and what was going on in her life during the creation of this work of art?  Below are her links.

With this project I was able to gain a lot of practical insight that I think will help me in the future.  Additionally, by participating in this activity I was able to learn about each of my fellow students in a new light.  By doing this I also gained inspiration and motivation for the upcoming project, I think that a an element similar to this project should be incorporated into every blog project.  Specifically, with the comments that were posted to my blog they allowed me to notice how others view my works of art and how percpetions and interpretations can be different or similar.  I think this is a wonderful thing, most likely to my liberal minded thinking!  Great Project!

Project Number 2 Art Gallery Visit Number 1- Responding To Artwork

The first work of art that impacted my thoughts and feelings was by the American artist Marsden Hartley.  His oil on canvas painting that is simply titled Painting Number 46 (1914-1915) drew me to viewing it because of the style and colors used in the painting.  Also, the painting had an abstract approach attached to it which is my favorite style of painting.  I was able to connect to this particular painting because of this reason, additionally, since I paint in this fashion as well the artwork allowed me to see how others enjoy the similar methods as I, as well as gaining new insight to various methods and meanings behind such cetegories of art.  I would like to know more about this work of art specifically with the idea that initiated this creativty, where did it come from, and why?  What was going on duing Hartley's life,  his society, and if there was an exact cause for his work, or if it was a spontaneous decision, possibly stemming from boredom, happiness, or some other mood.

After walking around the Art Gallery and attempting to let a work of choose me I found myself being influenced by Charles Burchfield's painting titled Sun and Rocks (1918-1950).  This work of art made me think and feel about some spiritual atonement, which I enjoy partaking in this form of thinking.  The painting reminded me how my philosophical thinking can be so brilliant at times and how the world natural elements invoke this.  Furthermore, the connection came from how I incorporate the use of nature into my life; relaxation, thinking, and entertainment.  Being intrigued by this work of art it made the thought arise about why was this image depicted with the colors that are used, why not something more realistic?  Also, the same thoughts about the idea that developed this creativity and what was going on during the artist's life became prevalent.  I found myself thinking about question in regards to the length of time it took and why such a long period of development.

Thirdly, the work of art that I made a connection with was Henri Matisse's painting titled A Glimpse of Notre Dame in the Late Afternoon.  The reason being is due to some simple reasons, well in my opinion.  I thought that scene, or image in the picture brought feelings of relaxation and curiosity about what it would be like to actually be at the place in the painting.  Also, I enjoyed the colors used, they were not bright or did they give a bold impression.  When looking at it I felt relaxed and a sense of calmness overcame my mind and body, which is a good thing.   Moreover, while viewing this painting I again questioned the idea behind the creativity, but, with this specific painting I wanted to understand if the painting was structured to fit the thoughts and feelings that overcame me.  Was this Charles Burchfield's intentions?  Or was he attempting to depict something that is not similar to my thoughts or feelings?

Another  painting that I connected with was  Fernand Leger's work of art titled Smoke.  Mainly, the impression I received was one of astonishment, again, the abstract structure brought an elated feeling.  Mostly because it my favorite style of painting, however, another reason was due to the fact that it also made me think and feel that my painting's have some relevance in the art world.  I have been told that my artwork is only paint smeared on a canvas and makes no sense.  This painting (because it was noticed after others and allowed me to see that this form of art is accepted) gave me a feeling and thought process that revolved around confidence.  Not only does my work have meaning and worth, others think so as well, which is a great thing (this also the connection I had with the artwork). Furthermore, I was intrigued to know more about this work of art because of the similarity it has to my paintings.  Thoughts about possible advice, and methods for helping me enhance my work of art arose I was found myself asking questions to the deceased artist; how did you come up with this, and why?  Also, where did you get the courage to show this others?  If it was possible I would really enjoy asking Mr. Leger why he chose to do these forms of paintings and why not other styles.  Great stuff!

After viewing various paintings I considered looking at other forms of art, however, it was difficult to be since photographs were not allowed anywhere else except the first floor.  Still, I was able to find a sculpture that I connected with because of the elements that were incorporated into it.  Jacques Lipchitz's bronze sculpture Sailor with Guitar gave me an impression that was unique.  At first, it was the individual depicted in the sculpture, but the instrument, the guitar.  Since, I am involved with expressing my emotions through my bass guitars I found this piece captivating.  It also allowed me to have some form of unexplained connection with the artist and the sculpture, it was as if we had some music bond between us, which is unusual since I am a realist and understand that inanimate objects do not share these thoughts and feelings, nor  do dead people.  However, this bond transitioned into me wanting to know more about the piece and artist that created it.  The questions that came to light were; "Why a the guitar and sailor, why not not someone or something else?",  "Is this a real person or image that you saw?", and finally, "How long did this take, and why did you think this was important for your work?"  All of these questions arose and I began thinking about how art has much more depth to it, rather than only being a visual entertainment.

Lastly, my favorite work of art that I connect with was created by Robert Delauney.  His work of art titled Soleil, Tour, Aeroplane (Sun, Tower, Airplane) made a permanent impression for two main reasons.  The first reason has to do with the combination of color and style of art; the use of bright colors and the abstract-looking painting caught my attention without any hesitation.  Again, because this my favorite form of art and it amazes me that something like this can make it into an art gallery.  As for the second reason I was overcome with the use of elements that Delauney implemented.  His work of art has an abstract tendency, but, it also incorporates things that are easily noticed and give the work of art an understanding that something is going on, because of the modern elements involved in it.  To me, it tells a story or gives an impression that more than creative emotions is going on in this painting.  I began asking myself questions that pertained to the reason for this, was the artist deliberately trying to do this or was some other idea planned.  Also, I found myself wondering about the dates that are related to this painting.  Delauney's death was during the World War Two period and this painting seems as if it was created during my generation or closely before it.  Outstanding!  The world of art always brings new insight and I really enjoyed this painting.  I have come to the conclusion that I should visit the local art gallery more often.

Art Making/Material Exploration Number Two: Logo Design

What entered my mind about the logo creation was first confusion and doubt about my ideas.  I had no idea on how to interpret myself into a symbol or log.  However, after numerous sketches that stemmed from my thoughts (thoughts about my characteristics and day-to-day living) I was able to conjure up some images that could be implemented into the "Ben" logo.  Again, I did not think I was going to complete an ideal logo of my fruition's, but somehow, someway, I was successful!  Great stuff!
The process that I endured was rather unique in my opinion; First I jotted down ideas and thoughts in a web-like fashion.  Furthermore, I started sketching the geometric shape I wanted to use and settled on a triangle.  I thought that this shape gave the logo an image that represent the three things I enjoy most; school, writing, and philosophical thinking.  Hence, the reason for the triangle.  Additionally, I incorporated images that I thought represented myself into the logo, at first they were all over the place, but, eventually I was able to dignify which images were more accurate.  After taking this final images I made a sketch that allowed me to see the direction I wanted to take these objects to.  I made one and was unsatisfied, therefore, I created a new logo that represented my characteristics.  Each image defines who I am, specifically, the foot stepping on the criminal justice book represents my cynical perspective about the system.  Furthermore, the scroll represent the significance that education has in my life, while the Tops logo represents the current occupation I have and how I support my studies (yes, I pay for it out of my own pocket).  Also, the muscular arm that is holding a pen depicts my thoughts about how much I enjoy writing and how much of an asset I think it is in my life.  The skull with the brain that is projecting the yellow-mohawk looking thing is my quest for knowledge, I thoroughly enjoy learning, without any bias attached.  The black and white people in the corner are obvious I think, I sincerely despise racism and this image captures my thought about how two people can live in harmony regardless of their skin complexion.  Since I utilize public transportation and still somehow fulfill the requirements of work, school, internship, and whatever else I thought that this was a vital characteristic that should be presented, hence the reason why the bus is there.  Lastly, the eyeball in top of the logo represents how I am always observing things and attempting to soak in all the relevant information that will help me enhance my well-being.
After completing my logo the most important thing I learned was how much an image can symbolize as well as how they have significance in almost every element of society.  I find it to be amazing how I have not noticed the amount of art in the world that I passively walk by.  Even when I see an advertisement or other symbol I forgot about the creative process that went in to making the characteristics of whatever the logo is suggesting.  It is astonishing to think about how images create thoughts and tune themselves into what is intended to be thought of.  Again, great stuff!  Lastly, with this thought being generated it allows me to discuss what I thought to be the most important thing I learned from the material in this module.  The fact that a simple image can conjure up so many thoughts and feelings and even dictate what to think or feel from viewing the logo is an extremely fascinating process.  The amount of effort that goes into something like this is not even considered when a person is partaking in the viewing of a logo or symbol, outstanding!  The videos were great and allowed to gain a new found intelligence about the world and the things within it.  Prior to this I did not think of these things, again, I had a passive thought process that only "breezed" by these images and not notice the effort, detail, creativity, and relationship involved with them.  Once again, I am truly happy to have watched these films, amazing!  Here are my skecthes that led up to my final logo, let me know what you think.

Art Project Two

Well, the scale was as easy as reading for me, I thought that the charcoal was a bad choice because it was difficult to bring the scale to a lighter hue.  However, I feel I prevailed and graciously moved on to creating the color wheel.  The color wheel was interesting, after about ten consecutive attempts at it I finally reached the completed version.  I had one thought after finishing this, "How the f@*k did that happen?"  Cyan, magenta, and yellow?...Really?  I had no clue about the true color scale, and am still amazed that I was able to create this.
The media's were fascinating as well, I enjoyed the acrylic paint, thoroughly!  I think it has to do with the fact that I have some more knowledge about hues, and that I have some new kick ass materials to paint my next work of art.  Additionally, it gave me an idea about using the three colors to make an entire piece,  and blending only the three colors.
After completing this creation the most important discovery I attained was the fact that how colors stem from only a few basic forms.  I knew this somewhat, but, the possibilities are endless and now I feel I am able to make new art without purchasing a lot of materials, specifically with paint.  Great thing to know!
As for watching the videos the most important thing I learned was how the true color scale is magenta, yellow, and cyan (light blue or whatever it is called).  Moreover, the best part was watching the fast forwarded version on the making of the color wheel, I know that it was intended to be this way, but it also made me think about how fast art and various hues can be created in such a short time period.  My opinion about the videos is that they were awesome!  The showed me things that I never would have conceived or been able to comprehend without the visual aid.  Again, the videos were an outstanding learning experience for me, I thought they were awesome!
Below, I have attached my scale and color wheel, check them out and let me know what you think!

The Elements and Principles of Art Slide Show Blog

The elements and principles of art are the foundation of which art is defined.  It allows us to use specific terms (adjectives and verbs) to describe what it is that we are viewing.  Without it the description and conception of creativity may not have a plausible language, still, there would be words that are able to exemplify what we are viewing.  In this slide show I incorporated all of the elements and principles in photographs that I captured so that an example of what they are could be seen.  Each element and principle helps give the purpose of what the art is, in this case the photographs that were taken do this.  Additionally, the works of art may even have numerous elements and principles in them , this is determined mostly by the viewer, however, the artist can deliberately portray this in of their works of art.  Overall, the elements and principles allow people to define what they aer perceiving, it gives them the opportunity to be creative themselves as well as enhance their thinking process in regards to works of art.  I have included my slide show as a link so that it may be used as an example.

Color Theory and Emotional Effects

The numerous elements of color are able to provide an array of emotions, at times the use color can bring a broad range of emotions that immediately occur one after another, or even simultaneously.  The hue alone can have impressions on people and bring specific emotions, for most people a particular hue can bring emotions that stem from how they think about a particular color, and how they have been socially associated with the hue.  For example, someone may view a dark hue as something depressing, while others may see it as something more bold, or serious, and possibly even the opposite of depressing, happy feelings.  Also, the purity or strength of a color (also referred to as dullness and brightness) can impose feelings in a person.  Purer colors can bring a stronger sense of attention and make a person become energized, while dull (lighter hue or strength) hues may have the opposite effect, bringing feelings of calmness and tranquility. Even the value of a hue can have dramatic effects on a person's emotions, by adding black or white hues the overall color(hue) can promulgate one's feelings, again depending on how the person associates the specific hue with themselves and socially.  Within the realm of schemes emotions can be influenced by altering the hue of one color, mixing one hue with a closely related color, bringing two colors of the opposite color wheel together, implementing three hues, and even using four different colors.  The emotions generated from this can be "all over the place."  Again, with the use of a monochromatic scheme the feeling can be generated by how the person views the hue personally, and how they attach the color socially.  In regards to blending (the rest of the schemes) it has an interesting perspective.  A person's emotions can be effected with opposite feelings of the spectrum, happy and sad for example.  Moreover, the hues can appeal to them personally and then effect their emotions, for example, how a specific color is identified and associated with an individual provides their feelings when they view that hue or hues.  Once more, I think that color can bring emotions, however, the emotional response is triggered by how the person attaches them self to the hue, their memory has much to do with it, as well as how and what they learned to associate specific colors with.  Basically, the emotions generated by colors comes from personal and societal perspectives that have been engraved in a person's mind.
Most of the theoretical aspects of color are fascinating, however, one is particular has to do with the use of brighter hues and how people are influenced by them.  Bright and intense colors seems to have an uplifting effect on people, they somehow make the individual more aware of their surroundings, become energized, and even bring joyous and elated feelings.
From watching the Color film I learned how colors can have much influence on people's emotions.  Certain uses of bold colors  to express strong feelings is an interesting aspect, it allows the artist to convey how he or she is viewing something, and how their feelings are during the creation.  By viewing the the Feelings film it allowed to see how color can be used to invoke pride and to see the challenges faced with being thoughtful.  With this being said it is obviously assumed that feelings of evil, or bad decisions or choices are easier when compared to the opposite.  This represents how living and thinking in a certain way requires sacrifice and discipline.  Overall, the way in which art and the colors used in art has a major effect on human emotions.  I think the artists are quite aware of this phenomenon, however, the viewers of the art seem to have a passive frame of mind, and do not notice how hue effects their thoughts and feelings about many things.  Fascinating and astonishing at the same time, again, outstanding videos!
